Paul Gauguin 1848-1903 pintor post impresionista y escultor francés, su obra es considerada una de las más importantes de entre los pintores franceses del siglo XIX.
Sus experimentos sobre el color influyeron en la evolución de la pintura del fauvismo, movimiento que se desarrolla entre 1898-1908. Destaca en su técnica, la pincelada clásica de los pintores impresionistas franceses como Pissarro y Cézanne, a esto él agrega su dominio del claro obscuro, que imprime mayor definición a las imágenes. Se adentra en el Sintetismo, apuesta por áreas planas, remarcando los contornos. Lo que hay que pintar es la idea que elabora el pintor después de su experiencia, quitando lo superfluo y reteniendo la esencia. Así se consigue la síntesis de forma y color.
El arte no reproduce lo visible. Lo hace visible...
